Calliopée is a chamber music ensemble that accommodates and includes a string quintet, a wind quintet, a harp and a piano. Formed in 1999, the group is composed of musicians who exemplify a new generation of classical music. Alumni of elite conservatories and recipients of international recognition, they are all motivated by a similar passion for music, camaraderie and artistic exchange. The group assembles around the violist Karine, their artistic director. The muse of heroic poetry, Kalliopê, the “beautiful voiced” woman, is the inspiration for the ensemble’s name.
Calliopée’s concerts are characterized by their quality and capacity in a wide range of styles, along with a mix of enthusiasm and professionalism.
The group has most recently performed at the Czech Philharmonic in Prague, the Amadeus Festival in Germany, the Festival Présences for Radio-France, in the Honorary Room at Invalides, as well as during a chamber music series at the Opéra Bastille. Calliopée’s musicians can create new pieces, as they did while performing as finalists in Pablo Casals’ composition competition, or propose the entire works of Dvorak’s chamber music, as performed during their residence at the Czech Cultural Center in Paris.
Calliopée collaborates with a number of invited guests, such as the musicologists Guy Erisman, Alain Cochard, Harry Halbreich, musicians including Jan Talich, Bruno PasquierMikael Rudy, Alain Meunier, and soloists Vincent Figuriand Alain Carré. Institutions such as the Sacem, Spendidam, Musique Nouvelle en Liberté, and the Martinu Foundation in Prague provide support the group. Calliopée regularly produces varying thematic musical programs ranging from two to twenty musicians.
In collaboration with her friend, astrophysicist Hubert Reeves, Karine Lethiec created various original shows such as “From the Big Bang to the End of Time”, “Hubert Reeves Recounts the Stars with Music”, and “Mozart and the Stars” which mix music, stories from outer space and images from the deepest depths of the universe.
Selected by Les Jeunesses musicales de France, Calliopée has given over fifty performances on stages across France in Prokoviev’s original production of “Peter and the Wolf”.
Inspired by open-mindedness in these exciting times, Calliopée defends the creation of music by espousing and interpreting new works, always considering their import as equal to those of the considerable repertoire of classical and modern music.
Each June in Paris, this spirit is exemplified during the “Calliopée Festival”, which offers a dozen of short concerts during which invited composers and a vast repertoire of chamber music come together.
Calliopée is associated with the Czech Cultural Center in Paris where it presents large-scale events, most notably the celebration of the induction of the Czech Republic into the European Union. In partnership with the Minister of Cultural Affairs, Calliopée organized the “Czech Season in France” as well as the birthday commemorations for the composers Dvorak, Janeck and Martinu, which were given on the occasion of an extensive chamber music series. With the collaboration of the Paris town hall, Calliopée’s “musical marathons” ran during the last Nuits Blanche à Paris.
Calliopée’s concerts are intended as an opportunity for meetings and exchanges between the audience, musicians and composers.
